ALTRA JAPAN set-up a try-on event with both the TIMP and SUPERIOR 3.5 available for try out.

Many people were able to try-on ALTRA shoes for the first time and gave many good reviews. The 50KM race started out on a warm humid morning at 7:30AM.

The course starts out on the road before heading into the beautiful trails in Saitama.

Below is a course profile of both the 50KM & 30KM.

As you can see, the first section has a large climb to almost 900M.Despite it being warm an humid, the runners seemed to be having heaps of fun on the trails!

This race is environmentally friendly and implements a “my cup” policy where  participants each bring their own cup to reduce the amount of waste from the race.

It was very fun watching both the 30KM and 50KM finishers come in to the finish line. There was several customers from STRIDE LAB who participated in the race. Nice job!

There was also a large showing from the TOKYO TRAIL RUNNING club and they all made it to the finish line successfully.

Fun, goofy group of foreigners and locals exploring trails around TOKYO.

The cut-off time for the races are pretty lenient leading to a high finish rate of:
50KM-90.3%
30KM- 97.6%

All of the participants received DRYMAX socks as a gift from the race. Nothing better than DRYMAX socks with your ALTRA shoes!Participants also enjoyed being able to hop in the hotel hotspring right next to the finish.

Thanks to the race directors for putting on an awesome race and great job participants!!

41.25KM Relay Race (2.5km segements)

This race has a true neighbor feel to it and this year the weather was beautiful!
Runners checked in at Stride Lab in the morning before heading out to Tama River where the races were taking place.
This year two guest Olympians (Kensuke Takezawa-Beijing/ Mika Yoshikawa-London) came as guest runners/speakers and Kensuke fired the start line gun for the race start.and the kids were off!
It was very fun watching all the kids try their best and finish at the finish line. The next race was the young kids race (Hiyoko)and it was so cute watching the little ones experience one of their first races! In the meantime, the various relay groups were getting ready for the main event of the day, the full marathon relay race segmented into 2.5km sections.

Runners do an out-and-back course along the Tama river.

Relay teams can have anywhere from 4-10 members on each time and runners can run in any order and as many times as they like.

This race started at 10:30AM and the start was very exciting!
Each section of the relay runner carries the sash around the shoulder and passes it off to the next runner at the designated trade-off post.

With ALTRA being a sponsor of this race, they did a shoe try-on event with 6 different models of shoes. There was even ALTRA shoes for sales that the participants could buy at a discount price. Guest runner Takaoka-san also came and was MCing along with running the relay himself. He is a famous barefoot runner in Japan and has wrote a book called Zero Base Running.
There were different local vendors at this event such at TAK Beans Coffee and GARDEN Burger.Runners took turns passing of the sash to their teammates and doing the 2.5km course along Tama River. There was music being played during the event and multiple people MCing as well. This year we had another great turn-out. FAT ADAPTATION

Translated from STRIDE LAB’S Japanese blog post:
FAT ADAPTATION POST (JAPANESE)

Hello, it’s the Assistant Shop Manager.

As we talked about in the previous article “Mountain Nutrition”, there are various benefits of being able to efficiently use stored fat cells as a source of energy.

What do you have to do in order to be able to efficiently use the stored fat you have as energy when you are doing exercise?

FAT ADAPTATION is:

・the control of having a  body that easily uses fats as energy at rest and during exercise

Depending on the foods that you eat everyday, in addition to the   type/frequency of the exercise that you do, the ratio of nutrients that you are using for energy at rest/during exercise  is different.

Especially for ultra-marathons and long-time duration events, by the well balanced conversion of fats/sugars to energy during exercise,  being able to maintain a steady level of high performance is in high demand.

Also, even for short sprint-like high intensity activities,  by increasing  the predominance of fat metabolism, there is proof you can recover quickly and be able to maintain a high level of performance.

What happens when you are FAT ADAPTED ?

: As you can see in the graph below, (with a low carbohydrate diet)        during exercise it is not abnormal to have the ability to use fat                metabolism
Fat adapted runners doing even doing high intensity exercise are        able to utilize fat for energy
: you are able to decrease the amount of volume you intake during         exercise
: you are able to increase your ability to use lactic acid  as energy
: you are able to efficiently use your stored fats as energy during             exercise

LCD= Low Carb Diet HCD=High Carb Diet

*The accumulation of everyday is very important for ( FAT ADAPTATION).
Increase the amount of the ratio of fat (MCTS) you are intaking each day and let’s check your balance of total intake of carbohydrates, protein and fats within your meals.

STRIDE LAB is recommending to take 1 pack of the NISSHIN OilliO MCT Supplement Jelly every morning.

*By taking enough MCTS at breakfast, you can keep a high level of concentration in the morning and have enough energy to get through lunch. Also, even in the case of doing exercise, MCTS  can be easily used as energy so they are said to be the all-purpose supplement.

To say say it super simply…

By continuing the example in the previous blog submission about the (wallet) and (bank) :

{energy from sugar is like the money in your wallet and energy from fat is like your money in the bank i.e. you can use your money in your wallet easily but only have a limited amount, whereas, you have larger of money in the bank but it is more difficult to access},

MCTS are your:

(Debit Card)

In your wallet, you have your debit card and a little bit of cash (sugars) but actually with having your card you can use any amount of money that you have in your bank account (fats) while at the same time using your cash /change (sugars) for immediate necessary use.

Take (MCT Jelly) at breakfast

While using the ingested MCTS as energy, the conversion of stored fats to energy by the Krebs Cycle will also be activated

By continuing this everyday, this circuit (Krebs Cycle) will constantly be activated
=    ( FAT ADAPTATION)

How is the assistant shop manager taking these MCTS?
*The assistant shop manager is consistently using this supplement to his liking. Depending on the people, some people it will be necessary to take in more energy than this whereas for others, by taking this much they will have an upset stomach so it is important to practice to use this supplement before a race.

1. Every 2-3 hours during a race 1 pack (6g) of MCT Jelly
or
2: In a flask of 500ml of water add 1 pack of MAGON Gel together with up to 10g of MCT Powder and drink every 2-3 hours
Next time we will be writing more specifically about how to go about being (Fat Adapted).

EDITORS NOTE:

We have lots of fat in our body (some more than others).
Our bodies have the ability to burn fat for energy.
If we can be efficient at burning fat for energy, we can be more efficient at doing long distance exercise.

GUNMA 100KM Walking Event

GUNMA 100KM Walking Event
May 12th 2018

This past weekend ALTRA JAPAN sponsored several races but we will be writing a report about the GUNMA 100KM walking event.

This was GUNMA 100KM’S 8th year hosting the event and the course is the same course as the New Year Ekiden and over 360 challengers would be attempting this event.

The slogan of the GUNMA 100KM is  “Challenge your limits”.

Friday, May 11th, people gathered at the GUNMA Maebashi Meeting Hall for a pre-race all-you-can-eat/drink party. ALTRA also did a try-on demo with the TORIN 3.0 shoes.
Many people were able to try ALTRA shoes for the first time and learn about ALTRA’S  ZERODROP/FOOTSHAPE features. At the party, ALTRA’S ambassador TARO TANAKA from Fukuoka gave a demonstration how to properly tie shoes. When walking 100KM it is important to have your shoes tied properly!
Guest comedians Ankan Minkan also came to enjoy the party.

They would be doing the walk the following day as well.

After everyone enjoyed the party together, everyone went back home to get their final preparations ready for the next day!

Saturday morning at 9AM the walk started at the GUNMA City Hall.ALTRA AMBASSADOR Taro high-fived everyone as they were off on their 100KM journey!

This year the weather was warm and sunny! Much better than lasts year’s cold/rainy weather!

The 100KM course starts at the City Hall in Maebashi walkers loop counterclockwise to Oota City Hall, east of Maebashi, then heading back to Maebashi.

Course map

There are Aid-Stations every 10KM or so where walkers can refuel with various aid station goodies, take a quick rest and change clothes!
Walkers continued their journey through the night.

Gunma people love their mascot “Gunma-chan”

Many walkers enjoyed a massage at the 56KM mark late at night!
Early Sunday morning walkers made their way into the finish line! Many fans and staff were there to cheer on the participants!
ALTRA JAPAN was also very happy to see  many participants wearing various models of ALTRA shoes!

Guest Comedians ANKAN MINKAN successfully completed the walk and greeted the remaining finishers at the goal gate.
After the final walkers finished at 1PM, partipants could finally rest/relax.  It was very emotional seeing many participants cross the finish line with tears in their eyes.

Many people took pictures after the race with various mascots and the comedians.
We recommend the GUNMA 100KM to anyone who is looking to challenge them-self while making lifelong friendships along the way. GUNMA people are very hospital and this can be an experience of a lifetime!

If you need help registering for the race, let us know and we can assist in the registration process.

STRIDE LAB Group Runs!

Knowing that running is always more fun in a group, STRIDE LAB has several group runs throughout the week.

FREE WEDNESDAYS 8:15PM approximately 5km slow pace
This run usually gets 8-15 people and each week we do a different route. Not unusual to come back and have a drink/snacks together.

SUNDAYS-time varied (anything from 400m repeats to 50km trail runs). Sometimes we run with LUNA SANDALS..and sometimes will go to Takao-san. We also often have previous professional runners come and do clinics and group runs on the weekend. The Sunday runs usually have a small fee to cover instruction, transportation, ect.  Every week is different and there is always something exciting going on. Our STRIDE LAB Japanese facebook page posts information regarding each weeks run. We are waiting to run together!

Mountain Nutrition

Stride Lab lab carries lots of nutrition of products for Trail-Runners, Ultra-Runners, Hikers, ect who are moving for long periods of time.

The ability for the body to be able to convert fats to energy is very essential.

Normally at rest, basal metabolism is maintained by the efficient use of sugars and fats as energy.

However,  comparatively, there are individual differences depending on the person and unfortunately even at rest, sugar metabolism is predominant, stored up fats are unable to be burned, the fat metabolism’s system is difficult to use and the clearance of lactate can be delayed.
Oppositely, if at rest your body can metabolize fats well, your body then has the ability to get constant energy from accumulated fat cells and your body becomes able to do aerobic exercise easily.

Carbohydrates (sugars) can be a major source of energy and upon intake, they are quickly converted to energy so for nutrient (energy) replenishment we want to say thank you but the amount of sugars that are stored inside of our body is limited and we have to incessantly continue to replenish them.

Additionally, there are a lot of fats stored inside of your body and even with a small amount, (fats) can become a large source of energy so its not as necessary to intake fats as often as it is to sugars.

However, the absorption of fats are slow so it takes time after consumption to become energy.

To use an analogy:  sugars are the [money] inside of your [wallet]
=When you want to use your money, you can take your wallet out of your pocket and use it even immediately but, the amount of money inside of your wallet is limited to a certain extent and you are unable to use more money than you currently have inside of your wallet.

Using this analogy, fats would be your money in the [bank]
=you have a lot of money stored away in the bank but even if you need the money immediately, you are unable to use it.

If you are skillfully able to manage both of these types of money, you should be able to smoothly get by life, right?  lol

Also the same goes for during exercise:
When you run up a steep hill at a high intensity you use those necessary sugars at hand as quick energy.  That energy you have is limited so if you continue to run at a high intensity, you will become exhausted and your legs will stop.
Compared to that, when you run long distance races like the full-marathon and ultra-marathons,  your sugars (your wallet) and fats (the bank) contribute to having a well balanced output of energy and you are able to continue running with stable energy for long periods of time.

How can we make our bodies be  “well balanced” and able to use use energy like this ?

The first thing that is essential to do is to increase the amount of fat metabolism that is being regularly used for energy!

In the case that you only eat sugars, also the energy that you will be using is only sugars and no matter how much fat you take during exercise, it is very difficult to utilize these fats.

So, STRIDE LAB recommends taking fats from the morning(6g-20g) to make your body be able to metabolize fat on a regular basis.

At the beginning, first start out by taking about 6g of fat and continue gradually increasing that once you get used to it.

☆Depending on the people, taking too much fat too quickly can lead to digestive problems in some cases so start out by increasing the amount little by little.

Our STRIDE LAB staff had no problem taking 20g from the start.

Nisshin MCT Oil Supplement Jelly
Nisshin MCT Powder
(Try starting with Nisshin MCT Oil Supplement Jelly)

Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT)easy to eat, yogurt flavored jelly product
1 pack is only a mass of 15g but there is 6.2g of MCTs containing 60 Kcal.

Recommended points:
1. easy to eat yogurt flavored
2.  light weight and high calorie
3.  doesn’t become sticky and easy to carry

*What are MCTs?*
1 Carbon Chain and 8-12 fatty acids
After MCTs are absorbed by the gut, they are taken via the hepatic portal vein to the liver where they are converted into energy within the  bloodstream.

After long chain fatty acids are absorbed by the gut, they take time and pass through the veins and are stored as fat cells.

MCTs are fatty acids that reach the liver quickly and are easy to be utilized as energy.

Why you should take MCTs every morning:
-increases fat metabolism
*by increasing ketone bodies in the blood, the absorption of sugars is slowed down
-running out of glycogen is delayed
*With the continuous intake of MCTs, the usage of glycogen is decreased and endurance sports performance is increased.

The reason for recommending MCTs to customers at specialty sport shops:
1. with regular consumption of MCTs, you are are able to make your body highly energy efficient at using energy
-Within the ratio of nutrients consumed, by increasing the quantity of high quality fats, you are able to use body fat as energy at rest and during exercise as well as being able to maintain steady performance.
2. as a nutrition supplement during exercise
-Generally the supplements on the market are high in sugars (carbohydrates) which lead to high spikes in insulin levels and compared to fats, the the volume of intake for sugars (carbohydrates) is more than double that of fats (it is easier to consume calories of fats that it is sugars).
-1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 Kcal whereas 1 gram of Fat=9Kcal so by lowering your consumed volume by more than half, you decrease the stress on internal organs (it’s easier to continue moving quickly with less digestive stress). Also, with fats being calorically higher density foods than carbohydrates, you don’t need to carry as much nutrition weight with you.

This time we will cover up until here.

Thanks for reading the long/dense sentences in this article.

The shop manager told me to write a short and easy to understand but this was all I was the best I could do! Next time it will be written a bit easier to understand!
